In such case we must *not* return to the faulting insn - that would repeat the entire thing without making any progress; what we need instead is to treat that as failed (user) memory access. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The function setup_tsb_params has exactly one caller tsb_grow. The function tsb_grow passes in a tsb_bytes value that is between 8192 and 1048576 inclusive, and is guaranteed to be a power of 2. The function setup_tsb_params verifies this property with a switch statement and then prints an error and causes the task to exit if this is not true. In practice that print statement can never be reached because tsb_grow never passes in a bad tsb_size. So if tsb_size ever gets a bad value that is a kernel bug. So replace the do_exit which is effectively an open coded version of BUG() with an actuall call to BUG(). Making it clearer that this is a case that can never, and should never happen. In order to reduce the difficulty of the first version of code review. In this version, we disable PMD/huge page mapping of vmemmap if this feature was enabled. This acutely eliminates a bunch of the complex code doing page table manipulation. When this patch series is solid, we cam add the code of vmemmap page table manipulation in the future. The struct page structures (page structs) are used to describe a physical page frame. By default, there is an one-to-one mapping from a page frame to it's corresponding page struct. The HugeTLB pages consist of multiple base page size pages and is supported by many architectures. See hugetlbpage.rst in the Documentation directory for more details. On the x86 architecture, HugeTLB pages of size 2MB and 1GB are currently supported. Since the base page size on x86 is 4KB, a 2MB HugeTLB page consists of 512 base pages and a 1GB HugeTLB page consists of 4096 base pages. For each base page, there is a corresponding page struct. Within the HugeTLB subsystem, only the first 4 page structs are used to contain unique information about a HugeTLB page. HUGETLB_CGROUP_MIN_ORDER provides this upper limit. The only 'useful' information in the remaining page structs is the compound_head field, and this field is the same for all tail pages. By removing redundant page structs for HugeTLB pages, memory can returned to the buddy allocator for other uses. When the system boot up, every 2M HugeTLB has 512 struct page structs which size is 8 pages(sizeof(struct page) * 512 / PAGE_SIZE). Apart from 2MB HugeTLB page, we also have 1GB HugeTLB page. It is similar to the 2MB HugeTLB page. We also can use this approach to free the vmemmap pages. In this case, for the 1GB HugeTLB page, we can save 4094 pages. This is a very substantial gain. On our server, run some SPDK/QEMU applications which will use 1024GB HugeTLB page. With this feature enabled, we can save ~16GB (1G hugepage)/~12GB (2MB hugepage) memory. Because there are vmemmap page tables reconstruction on the freeing/allocating path, it increases some overhead. It originates from Gerald Schaefer's report on an issue a week ago regarding to incorrect page fault accountings for retried page fault after commit 4064b9827063 ("mm: allow VM_FAULT_RETRY for multiple times"): https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20200610174811.44b94525@thinkpad/ What this series did: - Correct page fault accounting: we do accounting for a page fault (no matter whether it's from #PF handling, or gup, or anything else) only with the one that completed the fault. For example, page fault retries should not be counted in page fault counters. Same to the perf events. - Unify definition of PERF_COUNT_SW_PAGE_FAULTS: currently this perf event is used in an adhoc way across different archs. Case (1): for many archs it's done at the entry of a page fault handler, so that it will also cover e.g. errornous faults. Case (2): for some other archs, it is only accounted when the page fault is resolved successfully. Case (3): there're still quite some archs that have not enabled this perf event. Since this series will touch merely all the archs, we unify this perf event to always follow case (1), which is the one that makes most sense. This includes both the per task flt_maj/flt_min counters, and the major/minor page fault perf events. To do this, the pt_regs pointer is passed into handle_mm_fault(). PERF_COUNT_SW_PAGE_FAULTS should still be kept in per-arch page fault handlers. So far, all the pt_regs pointer that passed into handle_mm_fault() is NULL, which means this patch should have no intented functional change. Moreover, all architectures have a call to either of these functions preceding the call to sparse_init() and in the most cases they are called one after the other. Mark the regions from memblock.memory as present during sparce_init() by making sparse_init() call memblocks_present(), make memblocks_present() and memory_present() functions static and remove redundant sparse_memory_present_with_active_regions() function. Also remove no longer required HAVE_MEMORY_PRESENT configuration option. These patches add generic versions of these functions in <asm-generic/pgalloc.h> and enable use of the generic functions where appropriate. In addition, functions declared and defined in <asm/pgalloc.h> headers are used mostly by core mm and early mm initialization in arch and there is no actual reason to have the <asm/pgalloc.h> included all over the place. The first patch in this series removes unneeded includes of <asm/pgalloc.h> In the end it didn't work out as neatly as I hoped and moving pXd_alloc_track() definitions to <asm-generic/pgalloc.h> would require unnecessary changes to arches that have custom page table allocations, so I've decided to move lib/ioremap.c to mm/ and make pgalloc-track.h local to mm/. This patch (of 8): In most cases <asm/pgalloc.h> header is required only for allocations of page table memory. Most of the .c files that include that header do not use symbols declared in <asm/pgalloc.h> and do not require that header. As for the other header files that used to include <asm/pgalloc.h>, it is possible to move that include into the .c file that actually uses symbols from <asm/pgalloc.h> and drop the include from the header file. The process was somewhat automated using sed -i -E '/[<"]asm\/pgalloc\.h/d' \ $(grep -L -w -f /tmp/xx \ $(git grep -E -l '[<"]asm/pgalloc\.h')) where /tmp/xx contains all the symbols defined in arch/*/include/asm/pgalloc.h.
