* Fix documentation and implementation of 'directory-name-p'Eli Zaretskii2015-12-031-3/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | * lisp/files.el (directory-name-p): Modify to recognize backslashes on MS-Windows and MS-DOS. Adjust the doc string accordingly. Use '=', not char-equal, for comparison, as letter-case cannot possibly be an issue here. * doc/lispref/files.texi (Directory Names): Move the documentation of directory-name-p here from "Relative File Names". Update the description per the changes in implementation. * etc/NEWS: Move the entry for 'directory-name-p' to its proper place and mark it documented.
* Document 'directory-files-recursively'Eli Zaretskii2015-12-011-7/+9
| | | | | | | | | | | | * lisp/files.el (directory-files-recursively): Doc fix. Rename the argument MATCH to REGEXP, to be more explicit about its form. * doc/lispref/files.texi (Contents of Directories): Improve the documentation of 'directory-files-recursively'. Add cross-references. * etc/NEWS: Move the entry for 'directory-files-recursively' to its place and mark it documented.
* Check `file-remote-p' over absolute files names in files.elMichael Albinus2015-12-011-2/+2
| | | | | * lisp/files.el (directory-files-recursively) (get-free-disk-space): Check `file-remote-p' over absolute files names.
* Allow completion on dynamic module files in load-libraryEli Zaretskii2015-11-241-4/+5
| | | | | | * lisp/files.el (load-library): Bind completion-ignored-extensions to nil, to allow completion on dynamic modules typed as file names. Reported by Andy Moreton <andrewjmoreton@gmail.com>.
* Allow loading modules by 'load-file'Eli Zaretskii2015-11-221-2/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | * src/lread.c (Fload): Call 'unbind_to' with 'Fmodule_load' as the 2nd arg, to avoid the "binding stack not balanced" error. (syms_of_lread) <module-file-suffix>: New Lisp variable. * lisp/files.el (module-file-suffix): Declare. (load-file): Remove 'module-file-suffix' from 'completion-ignored-extensions', to allow completion on modules. * etc/NEWS: Mention 'module-file-suffix'.
* Fix docstring quoting problems with ‘ '’Paul Eggert2015-11-171-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Problem reported by Artur Malabarba in: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2015-11/msg01513.html Most of these fixes are to documentation; many involve fixing longstanding quoting glitches that are independent of the recent substitute-command-keys changes. The changes to code are: * lisp/cedet/mode-local.el (mode-local-augment-function-help) (describe-mode-local-overload): Substitute docstrings before displaying them. * lisp/emacs-lisp/cl-macs.el (cl--transform-lambda): Quote the generated docstring for later substitution.
* * doc/lispref/variables.texi (Directory Local Variables):Artur Malabarba2015-11-101-1/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | Document dir-locals wildcards * lisp/files.el (dir-locals-file): Point to Info node. * doc/emacs/custom.texi (Directory Variables): Document dir-locals wildcards. * etc/NEWS: Document new functionality.
* * lisp/files.el: Don't allow customization of dir-locals sortingArtur Malabarba2015-11-101-20/+13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | In retrospect, this is not a good idea for the same reason that `dir-locals-file' is a defconst, because it is important that this behaviour be "uniform across different environments and users". Sure, the user can still change the sorting with a hack, but we shouldn't encourage them to change it. (dir-locals--all-files): Return list in the order returned by `file-expand-wildcards'. (file-expand-wildcards): Document the sorting predicate used. (dir-locals-sort-predicate): Delete variable.
* * lisp/files.el (dir-locals-read-from-file): Better handle errorsArtur Malabarba2015-11-101-4/+11
|
* * lisp/files.el (dir-locals-find-file): Don't stop at unreadable filesArtur Malabarba2015-11-101-16/+6
| | | | | `locate-dominating-file' will now keep looking if the files it finds in a given directory are unreadable (or not files).
* * lisp/files.el (dir-locals-file): Allow wildcardsArtur Malabarba2015-11-101-62/+110
| | | | | | | | | | | | (dir-locals-find-file, dir-locals-collect-variables) (dir-locals-read-from-file): Update accordingly. (hack-dir-local-variables): Rename a local variable. * lisp/files-x.el (modify-dir-local-variable): Update accordingly * lisp/help-fns.el (describe-variable): Update accordingly * .gitignore: Add .dir-locals?.el
* * lisp/files.el (report-errors): ObsoleteArtur Malabarba2015-11-041-15/+4
| | | | | (normal-mode, hack-local-variables, dir-locals-find-file): Use `with-demoted-errors' instead.
* * lisp/files.el (write-file): Use vc-refresh-state.Stefan Monnier2015-10-281-1/+1

* Fix return value of 'set-file-extended-attributes'Eli Zaretskii2015-10-191-8/+13
| | | | | | | | | * lisp/files.el (set-file-extended-attributes): Return non-nil when setting either ACLs or SELinux context succeeds. Document the return value. (Bug#21699) * doc/lispref/files.texi (Changing Files): Document the return value of set-file-extended-attributes.
* Backslash cleanup in Elisp source filesPaul Eggert2015-09-171-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | This patch should not change behavior. It typically omits backslashes where they are redundant (e.g., in the string literal "^\$"). In a few places, insert backslashes where they make regular expressions clearer: e.g., replace "^\*" (equivalent to "^*") with "^\\*", which has the same effect as a regular expression. Also, use ‘\ %’ instead of ‘\%’ when avoiding confusion with SCCS IDs, and similarly use ‘\ $’ instead of ‘\$’ when avoiding confusion with RCS IDs, as that makes it clearer that the backslash is intended.
* Go back to grave quoting in source-code docstrings etc.Paul Eggert2015-09-071-19/+19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This reverts almost all my recent changes to use curved quotes in docstrings and/or strings used for error diagnostics. Also, don't bother trying to delete later backups if an earlier deletion fails, as this is a sign of trouble and it's better to stop when there's trouble.
