This patch builds on the previous by enabling the `new' multidictionary
API. A lot of the hunks are simply textual replacements of "dict_"
with "mdict_" and similar transformations.
A word of warning, even with the use of multidictionaries, the code
still does not satisfactorily fix the reported problems with gdb/23712
(or gdb/23010). We still have additional changes to make before that
happens.
gdb/ChangeLog:
PR gdb/23712
PR symtab/23010
* dictionary.h (struct dictionary): Replace declaration with
multidictionary.
(dict_create_hashed, dict_create_hashed_expandable)
(dict_create_linear, dict_create_linear_expandable)
(dict_free, dict_add_symbol, dict_add_pending, dict_empty)
(dict_iterator_first, dict_iterator_next, dict_iter_match_first)
(dict_iter_match_next, dict_size): Rename to "mdict_" versions
taking multidictionary argument.
[ALL_DICT_SYMBOLS]: Update for multidictionary.
* block.h (struct block) <dict>: Change to multidictionary
and rename `multidict'.
* block.c, buildsym.c, jit.c, mdebugread.c, objfiles.c,
symmisc.c: Update all dictionary references to multidictionary.

Coverity points out that all the "continue;" statements in the switch
case in parse_partial_symbols leak STABSTRING. This is because we
only release STABSTRING at the end of the scope, with:
if (stabstring
&& stabstring != debug_info->ss + fh->issBase + sh.iss)
xfree (stabstring);
but that bit of code is skipped if a case in the switch statement ends
with "continue".
Fix this by using gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr to manage the heap-allocated
version of 'stabsstring'.
I don't know how to test this.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-01-10 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com>
* mdebugread.c (parse_partial_symbols): Use
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr to manage heap-allocated 'stabsstring'.

This adds a new method to psymtab_storage to allocate storage for
psymtab dependencies, then changes the symbol readers to use it. This
has the effect of moving the storage to the psymtab storage obstack.

This introduces a new psymtab_storage class, which holds all
psymbol-related objects that are independent of the objfile. (This
latter contraint explains why psymbol_map was not moved; though this
could still be done with some work.)
This patch does not yet change where psymtab allocation is done --
that comes later. This just wraps everything in a single object to
make further transformations simpler.
Note that a shared_ptr is used to link from the objfile to the
psymtab_storage object. The end goal here is to allow a given symbol
reader to simply attach to the psymtab_storage object to the BFD, then
reuse it in later invocations; shared_ptr makes this simple to reason
about.

This changes add_psymbol_to_list to use an enum, rather than a pointer
to a vector, to decide where to put the new symbol. This reduces the
number of direct references to the static_psymbols and global_psymbols
members of the objfile, which is handy in a later patch.

start_psymtab_common takes references to the global_psymbols and
static_psymbols vectors, but it also has an objfile parameter. This
is redundant, so this patch simplifies the function by removing those
reference parameters.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

The expression
gdbarch_num_regs (gdbarch) + gdbarch_num_pseudo_regs (gdbarch)
is used quite often to find the number of cooked registers (raw + pseudo
registers). This patch introduces gdbarch_num_cooked_regs, which does
the equivalent. It substantially reduces required wrapping in some
places, so should improve readability.
There is a for loop in m68hc11_frame_unwind_cache that had iterated
until (the equivalent of) gdbarch_num_cooked_regs (gdbarch) - 1. During
review, we concluded that this is most likely an off-by-one mistake, so
I replaced it with gdbarch_num_cooked_regs (gdbarch).

This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. A
few standard approaches are used here:
* Renaming an inner (or outer, but more commonly inner) variable;
* Lowering a declaration to avoid a clash;
* Moving a declaration into a more inner scope to avoid a clash,
including the special case of moving a declaration into a loop header.
I did not consider any of the changes in this patch to be particularly
noteworthy, though of course they should all still be examined.

This patch finally makes partial symbols and partial symtabs
independent of the program space.
Specifically:
It changes add_psymbol_to_list to accept a section index, and changes
the psymbol readers to pass this. At the same time it removes the
code to add the objfile's section offset to the psymbol.
It adds an objfile argument to the psymtab textlow and texthigh
accessors and changes some code to use the raw variants instead.
It removes the "relocate" method from struct quick_symbol_functions,
as it is no longer needed any more.
It changes partial_symbol::address so that the relevant offset is now
applied at the point of use.

Right now some psymtab code checks whether a psymtab's textlow or
texthigh fields are valid by comparing against 0.
I imagine this is mildly wrong in the current environment, but once
psymtabs are relocated dynamically, it will no longer be correct,
because it will be much more normal to see a psymtab with a textlow of
zero -- this will just mean it appears at the start of the text
section.
This patch introduces validity bits to handle this situation more
nicely, and changes users of the code to follow.

This introduces accessors for the partial symbol table textlow and
texthigh fields. This lets us later arrange to relocate these values
at their point of use.
I did this conversion by renaming the fields. I didn't rename the
fields back afterward, thinking that on the off chance that someone
has a patch touching this area, then a merge would helpfully break
their compile.
I looked at making the fields private, but this interferes with the
memset in allocate_psymtab, and I didn't want to chase this down.
This conversion can be done later if need be.

This introduces a new header, buildsym-legacy.h, and changes all the
symbol readers to use it. The idea is to put the function-based
interface, that relies on the buildsym_compunit global, into a
separate header. Then when a symbol reader is updated to use the new
interface, it can simply not include buildsym-legacy.h, so it's easy
to be sure that the new API is used everywhere.

TYPE_TAG_NAME has been an occasional source of confusion and bugs. It
seems to me that it is only useful for C and C++ -- but even there,
not so much, because at least with DWARF there doesn't seem to be any
way to wind up with a type where the name and the tag name are both
non-NULL and different.
So, this patch removes TYPE_TAG_NAME entirely. This should save a
little memory, but more importantly, it simplifies this part of gdb.
A few minor test suite adjustments were needed. In some situations
the new code does not yield identical output to the old code.

The complaint system seems to allow for multiple different complaint
topics. However, in practice only symfile_complaints has ever been
defined. Seeing that complaints.c dates to 1992, and that no new
complaints have been added in the intervening years, I think it is
reasonable to admit that complaints are specifically related to
debuginfo reading.
This patch removes symfile_complaints and updates all the callers.
Some of these spots should perhaps be calls to warning instead, but I
did not make that change.

Currently, we have a mess of symbol name hashing/comparison routines.
There's msymbol_hash for mangled names, and dict_hash and
msymbol_hash_iw for demangled names. Then there's strcmp_iw,
strcmp_iw_ordered and Ada's full_match/wild_match, which all have to
agree with the hashing routines. That's why dict_hash is really about
Ada names. From the inconsistency department, minimal symbol hashing
doesn't go via dict_hash, so Ada's wild matching can't ever work with
minimal symbols.
This patch starts fixing this, by doing two things:
#1 - adds a language vector method to let each language decide how to
compute a symbol name hash.
#2 - makes dictionaries know the language of the symbols they hold,
and then use the dictionaries language to decide which hashing
method to use.
For now, this is just scaffolding, since all languages install the
default method. The series will make C++ install its own hashing
method later on, and will add per-language symbol name comparison
routines too.
This patch was originally based on a patch that Keith wrote for the
libcc1/C++ WIP support.

psymbol_allocation_list is basically a vector implementation. We can
replace it with an std::vector, now that objfile has been C++-ified.
I sent this to the buildbot, there are a few suspicious failures, but
I don't think they are related to this patch. For example on powerpc:
new FAIL: gdb.base/catch-syscall.exp: execve: syscall execve has returned
new FAIL: gdb.base/catch-syscall.exp: execve: continue to main
new FAIL: gdb.base/catch-syscall.exp: execve: continue until exit
I get the same failures when testing manually on gcc112, without this
patch.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* objfiles.h: Don't include symfile.h.
(struct partial_symbol): Remove forward-declaration.
(struct objfile) <global_psymbols, static_psymbols>: Change type

This changes the interfaces to init_type and arch_type to take the
type length in bits as input (instead of as bytes). The routines
assert that the length is a multiple of TARGET_CHAR_BIT.
For consistency, arch_flags_type is changed likewise, so that now
all type creation interfaces always use length in bits.
All callers are updated in the straightforward manner.
The assert actually found a bug in read_range_type, where the
init_integer_type routine was called with a wrong argument (probably
a bug introduced with the conversion to use init_integer_type).

This changes minimal_symbol_reader to require the objfile to be
passed to the constructor. The class now records the objfile and
automatically uses it later in "install".
This is a minor cleanup that will come in useful in the next patch.
It is separate from the first patch to keep that one a bit simpler to
understand.

Many callers of init_float_type and arch_float_type still pass a NULL
floatformat. This commit changes those callers where the floatformat
that is supposed to be use is obvious. There are two categories where
this is the case:
- A number of built-in types are intended to match the platform ABI
floating-point types (i.e. types that use gdbarch_float_bit etc.).
Those places should use the platform ABI floating-point formats
defined via gdbarch_float_format etc.
- A number of language built-in types should simply use IEEE floating-
point formats, since the language actually defines that this is the
format that must be used to implement floating-point types for this
language. (This affects Java, Go, and Rust.) The same applies for
to the predefined "RS/6000" stabs floating-point built-in types.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* ada-lang.c (ada_language_arch_info): Use gdbarch-provided
platform ABI floating-point formats for built-in types.
* d-lang.c (build_d_types): Likewise.
* f-lang.c (build_fortran_types): Likewise.
* m2-lang.c (build_m2_types): Likewise.
* mdebugread.c (basic_type): Likewise.
* go-lang.c (build_go_types): Use IEEE floating-point formats
for language built-in types as mandanted by the language.
* jv-lang.c (build_java_types): Likewise.
* rust-lang.c (rust_language_arch_info): Likewise.
* stabsread.c (rs6000_builtin_type): Likewise.

init_type (and arch_integer_type) currently use a special hack to set the
TYPE_NOSIGN flag if the type name is exactly "char". This commit moves the
hack up to the callers of those routines.
The special case currently can hit only for types created from dwarf2read,
but read_base_type actually implements the "char" check itself, so it is
redundant to do it in init_type as well. (Note that stabsread.c and the
other type readers always pass NULL as name to init_type, so the special
case can never hit for those.)
A few other cases create pre-definded types with a hard-coded name of "char";
the commit simply moves setting the TYPE_NOSIGN flag to those places.
No functional change intended.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* gdbtypes.c (init_type): Remove "char" special case.
(arch_integer_type): Likewise.
(gdbtypes_post_init): Set TYPE_NOSIGN for "char" type.
(objfile_type): Likewise.
* mdebugread.c (basic_type): Likewise.

This adds a number of helper routines for creating objfile-owned types;
these correspond 1:1 to the already existing helper routines for creating
gdbarch-owned types, and are intended to be used instead of init_type.
A shared fragment of init_float_type and arch_float_type is extracted into
a separate subroutine verify_subroutine.
The commit also brings the interface of init_type in line with the one for
arch_type. In particular, this means removing the FLAGS argument; callers
now set the required flags directly. (Since most callers use the new
helper routines, very few callers actually need to set any additional
flags directly any more.)
Note that this means all the TYPE_FLAGS_... defined are no longer needed
anywhere; they will be removed by a follow-on commit.
All users of init_type are changed to use on of the new helpers where
possible. No functional change intended.

This fixes this error in C++ mode:
/home/pedro/gdb/mygit/cxx-convertion/src/gdb/mdebugread.c:654:11: error: invalid conversion from ‘int’ to ‘address_class’ [-fpermissive]
theclass = mdebug_register_index;
^
The "theclass" local is of type enum address_class, however, what it
really holds is an address class index. Class index values by design
match the address class values up until LOC_FINAL_VALUE, but extend
beyond that, so it's not really right to store an address class index
in an enum address_class.
The fix is really the same making the 'theclass' local be of type int,
but while we're at it, we get rid of the goto, and thus the local
becomes the 'aclass_index' parameter in the new add_data_symbol
function.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2015-10-29 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com>
* mdebugread.c (add_data_symbol): New function, factored out from
...
(parse_symbol): ... here. Delete 'theclass' local.

Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).
The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.
Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.
Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.
I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.
Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the
size, thanks to David Malcom's script. I fixed some bits by hand, but
there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not).

In the following code:
struct symbol *wsym = (struct symbol *) NULL;
the cast of NULL is redundant, it adds noise, and is just one more thing
to change if the type of wsym ever changes. There are a relatively
small number of places in gdb where the above code pattern is used.
Usually the cast is removed like this:
struct symbol *wsym = NULL;
This commit updates all the places within the gdb/ directory where we
cast NULL during assignment, removing the cast.

This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort. The idea is
to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the
equivalents in the XNEW family. This avoids adding an explicit cast, so
it keeps the code a bit more readable. Some of them also map relatively
well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be
possible to do scripted replacements if needed.
I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or
multiple "objects". Allocation of variable sizes (such as strings or
buffer handling) will be for later (and won't use XNEW).
- xmalloc (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEW (struct foo)
- xmalloc (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEWVEC (struct foo, num)
- xcalloc (1, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEW (struct foo)
- xcalloc (num, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEWVEC (struct foo, num)
- xrealloc (p, num * sizeof (struct foo) -> XRESIZEVEC (struct foo, p, num)
- obstack_alloc (ob, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEW (ob, struct foo)
- obstack_alloc (ob, num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEWVEC (ob, struct foo, num)
- alloca (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCA (struct foo)
- alloca (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCAVEC (struct foo, num)
Some instances of xmalloc followed by memset to zero the buffer were
replaced by XCNEW or XCNEWVEC.
I regtested on x86-64, Ubuntu 14.04, but the patch touches many
architecture-specific files. For those I'll have to rely on the
buildbot or people complaining that I broke their gdb.

This patch renames symbols that happen to have names which are
reserved keywords in C++.
Most of this was generated with Tromey's cxx-conversion.el script.
Some places where later hand massaged a bit, to fix formatting, etc.
And this was rebased several times meanwhile, along with re-running
the script, so re-running the script from scratch probably does not
result in the exact same output. I don't think that matters anyway.
