This manual describes version &VERSION; of the GNOME Control Center. Introduction The GNOME Control Center provides a central place for the user to setup their GNOME experience. It can let you configure anything from the behavior of your window borders to the default font type. To open the GNOME Control Center, type gnomecc in a terminal window. If you have Ximian GNOME, you can open the GNOME Control Center by using System Settings . The GNOME Control Center Interface The GNOME Control Center can come in two forms. The first is the basic one that you have if you have the default package installed. However, if you have the GNOME Control Center Plus installed, you will get the ability to configure advanced options and customize the Sawfish window manager. Assuming you have the GNOME Control Center Plus package installed, you will have the following sections listed on the left side of the window: Main Lets you control the basic functionality of the desktop. This features items such as sound and background. Advanced Lets you control more advanced parts of GNOME, such as behavior and Palm Pilot sync options. Sawfish window manager Lets you control the most intimate details about the Sawfish window manager. What does <application>GNOME Control Center Plus</application> provide? The GNOME Control Center Plus provides both the Advanced and Sawfish window manager sections. If you don't have the package installed, they will simply not show up. You just need to click the section name, and the capplets will show up in the right section. To open a capplet, just click on its graphic or text. The Main Section The main section includes basic capplets, geared more towards the new user. These include: Background Configures the background image on your desktop. Configures properties of the keyboard such as beep settings and repeating. Selects the screensaver of choice and other properties of the screensaver. Configures the GNOME sound daemon. Sets up the startup hint. The Advanced Section The advanced section is included in the GNOME Control Center Plus package. This lets you configure more advanced properties of your GNOME environment. Configures small user interface options such as where buttons are located. Selects the default applications to be used for editing text files and more. Sets up how GNOME treats your CD-ROM. File Types and Programs Configures what application should be used to open different file types. This is for your GNOME 1.4 applications. Gtk+ Theme Selector Configures the look of your buttons, menus, text, and more in your GNOME environment. Startup Applications Sets up what programs start when GNOME intially starts. Sawfish Window Manager Section The Sawfish Window Manager section lets you configure every facet of your Sawfish window manager. The Sawfish Window Manager comes only in the GNOME Control Center Plus package. Appearance Configures the theme to use for your window borders. Focus Behavior Configures how Sawfish selects which is the application with focus. Matched Windows Meta Sets the skill level of the user, and changes the amount of options based on the selection. Minimizing and Maximizing How Sawfish treats windows when they're minimized or maximized. Miscellaneous Configures miscellaneous options of Sawfish. Moving and Resizing Configures how windows are handled while being resized or moved. Placement Lets you set how windows are placed when they're open. Shortcuts Lets you setup keybindings for faster interaction with your GNOME environment. Sound Configures if and when sounds should be played for window events.
